Even the most ardent supporter of science and higher critics of the Bible often admit that Genesis 10 is very accurate document. There is no other detailed ancient document from any other source. There is nothing in any other writing discovered by archaeologist which is at all comparable as far as accuracy.
As we read in Ch 9, Shem Ham & Japheth sons of Noah were to populate the earth. The population of the world, as we know it now, are all descendants of these 3 sons. Here in the next 2 chapters, we will learn who settled where. I am only going to cover some major points presented in this chapter and how it relates to the rest of the scripture in the Bible and our present-day struggles. This chapter explains a lot of questions regarding the history of earth and geography. Verse 2 The sons[a] of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek, and Tiras.
Gomer: Identified with the district of Cimmeria, north of the black sea, some descendants moving westward in an area with the current name of Germany & wales. Three of Gomer’s sons are identified as Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. Ashkenaz identified with Germany and to this day German Jews are called Ashkenazi. They are also believed to occupy Denmark, Sweden, and Armenia.
Magog: Shorten to Gog was the ancestor of the Scythian who also inhibited the black sea area. Magog is commonly associated with other 2 sons, Meshek & Tubal which today we know by name Moscow.
Madai is the ancestor of Medes. They settled into what is now the region of Persia. Aryans also developed from this line and settled into India. Name Javan is the original form of Ionia which was the same as Greece. As you can see most of Europe was inhabited by Japheth’s descendants. Likewise, most of Africa was inhabited by the descendants of Ham.
The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan.7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteka. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.
Cush is present-day Ethiopia. We all know about Egypt. Put is Libya. Seba is Sudan. The rest of the sons all settled into Arabia. Sheba & Dedan refers to Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.
Verse 8: mention the name NIMROD son of Cush. He was a very interesting character. His name means REBEL and he is in reality prototype or picture of ANTICHRIST. He was a mighty hunter BEFORE God and the right translation is AGAINST God. He was a hunter of soul and he turned people against God and we will see in the next chapter how he talked them into building the Tower of Babel. He was the builder & king of Babylon and the city of Nineveh which gave birth to the Assyrian empire. Both of these empires destroyed the temple and took Jews in captivity. This why Babylon pops up all over the bible all the way into revelation. This is where rebellious started against God. We see in our world today where the theory of evolution is being pushdown our kids’ throats as fact. We see today how everything is being explained away with science without any solid proof. Bible is mocked as “fairy tale’ or “fable”. This is the same kind of rebellious that we see from Nimrod. In verse 14 Philistine is mentioned, Most of you remember Goliath the Philistine. Verse 17 mentions the name Sinite, this is where Chinese and Japanese people come from and they are descendants of Ham. It is interesting that Chinese people are always been identified with prefix “Sino” ( e.g., Sinology, the study of Chinese history). One can reach a conclusion that Mongolian people and therefore American Indians may have come from the Hamitic line.
In Verse 21 first time you see the mention of word Eber which translates to Hebrews. Shem is the father of all Jewish & Arab people ( Abraham bloodline). All of you are familiar with word antisemitism, this is where it comes from. Jews are Semitic people and Jesus was to come from this bloodline and therefore Satan has tried to destroy the Jews throughout the history. There is no other explanation for antisemitism that we see throughout history.
I also want to draw your attention to Verse 25
Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg,[k] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.
Peleg lived at times when the tower of Babel was destroyed. It is here where continents were created as we know them now. where it says “the earth was divided” refers to land dividing. Before this point, the earth was connected and thus explains how people traveled to such places as Australia which are surrounded by water. If you are familiar with continental drift and if you have seen the models where continents fit like a puzzle you will understand this division.
Altogether 70 nations are mentioned in this chapter. Seventy is a significant number in the Bible. This is the same number of people who came to Egypt from Cannan.70 elders were appointed by Moses (Numbers 11:16). After reading the covenant God gave him to read to the people, Moses took 70 elders, along with Aaron and his sons, up Mount Sinai to have a special meal with God himself (Exodus 24:9 – 11). Ancient Israel spent a total number of 70 years in captivity in Babylon (Jeremiah 29:10). Seventy is also specially connected with Jerusalem. The city kept 70 years of Sabbaths while Judah was in Babylonian captivity (Jeremiah 25:11). Seventy sevens (490 years) were determined upon Jerusalem for it to complete its transgressions, to make an end for sins and for everlasting righteousness to enter into it (Daniel 9:24).
Next chapter we will see how fast the wickedness of people grew after the flood and how Nimrod led people to rebel against God. May God add a blessing to His word. Amen
