Genesis 6- Noah

This chapter is pivotal chapter in bible and one that teaches us so much . It is so important that Jesus refers to it in his message ” So shall coming of man be” ( Matthew 24:37-39) . Thus did Jesus not only verify the historicity of flood but also encouraged us to study the characteristic of the days before the flood, for same characteristics will be in place just before his coming.

Verse 1 tells us about the God’s Plan as told to Adam that go and multiply. Earth is populated and it is increasing. Sons Of God mentioned in verse is referring to angelic host created sometimes times before earth and these are the fallen angels. There is only one son of God in whom we have our salvation.. Jesus The Christ. It Goes on to say days of the man will be numbered to 120 days. There are 2 interpretation of this particular verse. It might mean that earth will be destroyed in 120 years. or that man will not live more than 120 years and there is arguments to support both view points. In my opinion this does not have major significance and there is a much bigger lesson that I would like to concentrate on.

There are 4 conditions mentioned in chapter 6 that I would like to examine and when we inspect it closely, we find that the world we live in meets all those conditions thus it is time to repent and accept Christ. Jesus used days of Noah as one of the signs of his second coming.

  1. Population explosion: At the time of flood, there was explosion in population ( verse 1). People were living under perfect tropical conditions ( no disease or harsh climate) and they were multiplying. Similar conditions exists today. Just to illustrate the population increase here are some numbers. It took roughly 1700 years , from the time of flood to civil war for earth population to reach 1 Billion. It doubled between the years of 1867-1935 , that is roughly 70 years, in next 30 years it reached to 3 BIL and it double to 6 Billion by year 2000. As I write this in year 2015, world population stands at 7.3 Billion. I think it is safe to say earth is populated. Just like to mention side note here similar prophecy is made regarding advance in technology ( Daniel) at the end times and when you measure the increase of knowledge, you find similar numbers.
  2. Wickedness & Evil: verse 5 says every thought of human heart was evil & the wickedness of his heart was great. At the time of Noah, sons of god ( fallen angels) were corrupting the minds of men. The offspring of these union were called Nephilim. There were giants living on earth at this time, as well as after. This is not just fairy tale story in Bible. There is scientific proof that giants roamed the world. There is evidence of footprints of very large men right next to dinosaur fossil. One thing you can say for sure is world is wicked today and evil is rampant. All we have to do is turn on the news and read about how much evil there is the world. The man today is fallen so far and there is no fear of God. Recently in Texas they started a church of Lucifer, such satanic worship is rampant through out the world. we have become educated but our heart has found perversion and has invented new ways to indulge in desire of the heart and every thought of most is evil.
  3. Corruption: The world is corrupt to it’s core. once again, all you have to do is read the headlines. Every day you hear about politician taking advantage of their position. In third world countries you can not even get in school without bribing. You can get away with anything if you have money as there is enough corrupt people in all sector of life. This great nation of America which was built on faith and integrity has become so corrupt at the highest level. Corruption is not limited to secular world but it has infiltrated the church as well. Church has become another business and instead of serving the God, there are more interested in mighty dollar. In order to please the world, they have watered down the scripture and the word that is 2 edged sword is turned into dull knife. Church of today is more worried about being politically correct instead of serving our almighty God. They are so worried about offending the masses that in process they offend the very God they are to serve.
  4. Violence: Do I need to even explain this? There is so much violence around us that we are numb to it. We live in world that has senseless violence. Here in our country, it seems like we have mass shooting every other month. Now a days good old murder does not even make headlines anymore. There is genocide all over the world where masses are killed. There is violence at home. There is violence in School. There is violence everywhere. Here are some mind boggling stats: 78 women are raped per hour here in USA. you can only imagine what that number is in world. 45 people are murdered per day in America. If you look at all violent crime data, numbers are staggering and this is not simply a matter of better record keeping or more people reporting the crime.

This was the condition of the world during time of Noah and conditions are very similar today. Critics of the Bible and those who do not believe in God point to flood as an cruel act. How can a loving God destroy all animals and kill all the population? First I would like to say by acknowledging the flood they are confessing the existence of very God they say does not exist. God changes his mind toward man only when Men changes his mind toward God. We can not continue to walk away from God and still seek his protection and blessing. As in time of Noah and today, we have removed God from our life ( no prayer in school etc) yet we still want the protection of God. We have to be faithful to God because He is always faithful and his blessing are from generation to generation. America the country which was built on principals of Bible and prayer, is turning away from God. We see similar behavior from nation of Israel in Scripture and such disobedience leads to destruction ( temple destruction for Israel, 9/11 for USA). Even after God decided to destroy the world, He gave them 100 years to repent and change their ways. He was merciful just as he was merciful to Adam when he kicked him out of garden of Eden, just as he was merciful to Cain, he showed his mercy and by Saving one just man Noah. What a glorious hope we have, as long as we are faithful even if the whole world is going to be destroyed he will make sure those after his heart are saved.

He gives Noah specific instruction on how to build “THE ARK”. It is not a Ship or boat as we see in so many children’s bible or story book. ARK actually looked like a coffin box and we will go into significance of that in next chapter. By the way even today when ship of any size is built, yes even the warship & cruise ship same ratio is used as given to Noah in bible. God also tells him who is going to be in the Ark with him & what needs to be taken as provisions. We are going to cover in detail the last few verses of the chapter in next study. It is important to pay attention to details of building the ark and how animals are going to come on the boat.

Key points in this chapter:

Sons of God: These are fallen angels who visit the earth and slept with women

Nephilim: These were the sons & daughters born of the such union. They were mighty man. Goliath was a nephilim. These super human beings might be the Gods so many other religions worship. The God’s you find in various mythology might be nephilim. We have signs of nephilim all over our world today. Have you ever had Starbucks coffee? There is nephilim on that cup (logo). Have you ever bought sneakers? Name Nike is nephilim Goddess.

Wickedness, Evil thoughts, Corruption & Violence all four are rampant in today’s world. Some might say they have existed throughout history and we just hear about it more because of TV & social media. I strongly disagree. There is pure Evil in world. Not too long ago may be generation ago, we did not have fearful society, kids played outside. We did not need to go through body search or metal detectors. There are part of the world where you have to go through such screening to in store or hotel and soon you will see same security here in America. Yes in past there were wicked , evil man such as Hitler but today it seems such men exist and are coming to power everywhere. Look at what is going on in Syria, Africa.

Most importantly God saves you and when he wants you to do something, he gives you specific instruction as well as means to achieve it. All we need to is what Noah did. He was obedient. Look at what last verse says
Noah did everything just as God commanded him. He did not add anything or used his judgement but did exactly what he was told.

Do you have Noah’s OBEDIENCE? oh what great lesson. Trust & Obey for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to TRUST & OBEY.

  2. GENESIS 11 Tower of Babel

Babel means, “Gate of God.” The phrase, “Tower of Babel” does not appear in the bible. It is the city and its tower. City received the name, Babel from the Hebrew word, Balal, meaning Jumble. Everyone spoke the common language. There is nothing wrong with a common language. It is a foundation of unity. Common language could have drawn people in the worshipping of God. It did not happen here. It perverted people to promote disobedience and unbelief. God’s gift of common language was misused. When God told Noah’s children to spread and multiply, they chose to settle in Shiner. Urban life has not been presented thus far in a favorable light. Cain built a city, and named if after his son Enoch. Nimrod, a descendant of Ham, seemed an empire builder, and according to Genesis 10, It is possible, he decided to settle in Shiner and decided to build a city and its tower. Settling in the land of Shiner was first an act of disobedience. God had commanded to spread and fill the land, and not settle in one area. They used brick for stone and tar for mortar. they said let us build a city and a tower, which reaches heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves. The purpose of building the city is made clear, in verse 4, to make for ourselves a name.

Arrogance, rebellion and pride seems to be the root of men’s activities here. They were scared of scattering all over, and felt insecure. They could not conceive the blessings and security coming as a result of dispersion, just as God commanded it. Despite rebellion, pride and unbelief are evident, the fear is the bigger problem.

God’s response to men’s fear is recorded in Genesis 11:5-8, God said, Let us go down, and confuse their language. Sometimes, we may feel, God allowed the situation to get out of control, or angels did not inform God in time or such thoughts. but it is not true. Evil did not lie in the fact that all spoke one language. Completion of the city or the tower did not threaten God’s sovereignty. It would violate God’s command to disperse and fill the land. In those days, men put their trust in man made bricks, and mortar.

Irony of this event is, what men desired, would have destroyed them, What they most dreaded, would prove to be a part of their deliverance. Man meant to name Babel, meaning gate of God, but God changed it Balal, “Confusion.

    following lessons can be learned.
    1) Man’s plans will never thwart God’s purpose.
    2) Unity is not the highest good, but purity and obedience to the word of God is.
    3) Communication gap created here can only be bridged by Christ.
    4) The Word of God, and NOT the works of our hands is the only thing worthy of our faith.
    5) Much of what man does on this earth is the monument to its insecurity

Bible does not mention of any destruction of tower, but some old literature states, the destruction of the tower. It was overturned by God with great wind, top burnt and bottom swallowed. middle was left standing to erode over time.
