“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.
Revelation 3:1 NKJV
The Compromise gives birth to corruption and corruption leads to deadness. The same pattern led to Church of Sardis, ” The DEAD CHURCH.” This church started with reformation in 1517. A man named Martin Luther took a stand against the papal power on the basis of Habakkuk 4: 2 and the change began. We are part of that reformation called the protestant church. The church of Sardis is the protestant church. Verse 1: Sardis was built on 1000 feet high bluff, it was an extremely rich city that seemed invincible until the yr 549 BC when Cyrus conquered it. Sardis was conquered again 300 yrs later in the same manner. Seven spirits of God mentioned here refers to the seven-fold nature of the Holy Spirit ( Isaiah 11:2). Why is this mentioned here? Because most mainline Protestants like Lutherans, Methodist, Wesleyan, Presbyterians will champion everything from same-sex marriage to the environmental issue but are wary of the ministry of the Holy Spirit. The word “name” translated from the Greek word “ONOMA” from which we get our word “DENOMINATION.” So we talk proudly about our past, how our church was started and built, basically about our reputation, on history, on what used to be. Resting on TRADITION, not RELATIONSHIP. The last church we looked at, Jesus had many corrections but He commended them for their works and charity. But here to Sardis, He simply says “You are DEAD.” Verse 2: Be watchful because their city fell twice when they were not watching. The same way we need to pay attention spiritually, it just when we think we are on solid ground, no one is going to knock us down is when Satan conquers us. Pay attention to 4 things in verse, strengthen, remember, hold fast & repent. Verse 3: this speaks of the RAPTURE. Verse 4-5: They are few who are true and will overcome. We see that there are churches who have spurned of mainline churches and are thriving because they are true to the word. I just don’t have enough space to explain the book of life but if you worried about if your name is in the book or not read John 10:28. Verse 6: Every generation needs its own revival, reformation, and renewal. We can’t just be satisfied with how it was in our parent’s day. We need to strengthen what we have, remember the TRUE Gospel, hold on to it without compromise and REPENT because He is coming upon the world as a thief, and we can OVERCOME by staying True.
