3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” Matthew 4:3
What is the enemy doing here? Satan has a way of creating doubt in our mind. He makes us question God’s plan and the scriptures when we are most vulnerable. Here Jesus was fasting for 40 days and night, His hunger was real. Physically, he needed nourishment and Satan uses that to tempt Jesus. Satan’s technique has not changed, this is exactly what he did to Eve and is using it on us today. At the most opportune time, he gets you to question God’s word and secondly your faith. How many times this question has come to your mind, If you are really a child of God, why is this happening to you? Why are you sick? Why are you struggling financially? Why is there a lack in your life physically or materially? First, he makes you question your relationship with God Just as he asked Jesus, “If you are the Son of God.” He knew very well who Jesus was and why he was on earth. Secondly, he will ask you to solve the problem in your own power. He will say, exercise your faith, make God DO IT NOW. Jesus knew not to take things into his own hands or rush the father. He would wait. Instead of eating the dry bread made out of stone, he waited and in few hours Angels came and ministered to him. But the most important thing to learn from this is Satan always wants you to “FEED YOUR FLESH.” It was not just about satisfying the hunger but instead making flesh priority over the spirit. Eve fell into temptation because she fulfilled her desire, David gave into his physical need, Esau sold his birth right. Today, Satan is tempting us the same way. Asking us to feed our flesh so we would not feed our spirit. Of course in the next verse, we have the solution. Jesus says Spiritual food is more important than Physical food. He chose to feed his spirit over physical need. If we can all learn to do that we can overcome any temptation Satan puts in our way. Amen.
