Genesis 19: Sodom & Gomorrah

Lot in this chapter paints a perfect picture of modern-day Christians. He thinks he has best of both worlds, the eternal benefit of saving grace and also the worldly benefits by fellowship with men of the world. Their wickedness bothers him a bit and he may not enter into all of their activities but in general he gets along with them just fine in name of PEACE or Christian behavior and is quite please with himself that he does. He pats himself in back for being a good christian however as we will see from Life of Lot, day of reckoning is coming.
The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Verse 1 is an eye-opening verse as far as how far Lot has sunk in his spiritual life. Last time when we read about Lot in chapter 13, He separated from his uncle and was looking toward Sodom and pitching a tent facing Sodom. Here in this verse we see he is sitting at the gate of Sodom. This tells us that now he had taken a position of leadership in this city. In those days, you could only sit at the gate if you had prominent place in city. First he looked at the city of Sodom ( Gen 13:10), 2 verses later he pitched a tent and in Ch 14 he moved into the city and now he is one of the leaders of this sinful city. As you can see, he arrived at the place one step at a time. We as christian walk away from God one step at a time, first we cut down on devotional time, then prayer time gets shorter, then we miss a church and before you know it, Like Lot you are sitting at the gate of Sodom. Be careful, Satan your enemy is ready to devour you one step at a time.
4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.

Now after Lot had convince the 2 angels ( notice Lord did not set foot in Sodom) to come to his home, men of Sodom surrounded Lot’s home so they may have sex with men who were visiting. The sin of homosexuality is not new. Sodom along with 4 other cities were destroyed because of it. Oh how we need to learn from this, today such sin is celebrated in our society, even in some of our churches. Please do not get me wrong, we are all sinners but no sin should be celebrated. No matter what sin we are suffering including sin of homosexuality, there is only one answer ….JESUS. Blood of Christ is the only thing that can wash away the sins.
So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, 7 and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! 8 See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

Lot, a man who walked with Abraham is now calling this wicked sinful men his brothers. how far has he fallen? As we read further, look at the solution he comes up with, he is willing to hand over his 2 virgin daughters. He had fallen so far and had become so influenced by his surroundings that instead of asking God for solution, he came up with solution that wicked would have suggested. Those of us who have daughters can not even imaging what would prompt Lot to suggest such solution. Initially, it seems as if Lot is so concerned about the 2 angels that he is willing to offer his daughters but in reality he has walked so far away from God that this solution seems fine to him.
9 And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. 10 But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Lot’s life has had no influence on this men. They rebuke him and are ready to break down the door to get to his guest. Has your Christianity become watered down? Do people you work with see Jesus thru your life? Do they notice you are different? If you are living, talking, acting in same manner as those who are not saved THEN you might be living like LOT. Angels strike the men with blindness and pull Lot inside but notice the wickedness of men, even in their blindness, they are trying to break into the house in order to fulfill their desires.
Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place! 13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

Once again we notice Lot’s Son in law did not listen to him. His daily walk did not reflect the faith and he had no respect of his family. Those of us who are parents must learn from this example. Does your words match your walk? Do you tell your kids to read scripture but your kids hardly see you read scripture? Do you drop them of to Sunday school or do you attend the service? Do you tell them not to drink, smoke but you have not given up those habits? Our testimony is our daily life and our walk with Christ. Here we see Lot failed in that account and later in chapter we will see the consequences in behavior of his daughters.
15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he[a] said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”

This guy Lot is work of art. What would you do if Angels came and told you to leave or you will die? most of us would be out of the door by the time he finishes the sentence but not Lot, he lingers to the point where Angels had to drag him and his family out forcefully.
18 Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords! 19 Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. 20 See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

Here again Lot shows his unfaithfulness, he is telling the angels that he can not escape to the mountains. He still wanted to be in the city. Mountain is where you meet God, Moses met God there, Elijah defeated the servants of Baal after his experience on Mt Carmel, Jesus went up to mountain to pray and Abraham went up to mount of Moriah to sacrifice Issac. God is calling you to mountain, mountain of devotion( Abraham), mountain of instructions and vision (Moses), mountain of passion ( Elijah), mountain of transfiguration (john peter & james). Are you ready to go or like Lot you want to stay in city? Like Lot you might be saved from destruction but unless you are fully ready to follow Jesus, you might end up in cave like LOT. Let God direct your path, if he has saved you from your Sodom, he is not going to abandon you. Where ever you may go, he will provide and care for you. Lot failed to see this.Like him many are saved but are not willing to fully submit to God and his will. We want to hold on to our way of thinking. we need to follow Jesus without doubt. As his word says, he will never leave you nor forsake you. Oh, what a promise.

In next couple of verses we see how Sodom and 4 other cities were destroyed and 1 was spared because Lot went there. Today, we know this area as the area surrounding DEAD SEA. The whole area is dead but in Book of Revelation we are promised that Dead sea area will be revived. Those who have seen it say this area looks like it was hit by atomic bomb. There is archeological data that suggests that once it was fertile ground with healthy population. City of Zoar, where lot fled is still in existence .
26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Lot’s wife looked back longingly. She probably enjoyed her life in Sodom and she wanted it back. Those of us who are saved must not look back at the old life otherwise like Lot’s wife we will not progress but will be paralyzed. In Luke 17 : 32-33 Jesus says , 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. So many times what we think of as life or what world sells it to us as Life, having good time etc, just leads us to destruction.

Verse 27-30, After seeing the destruction in form of brimstone & fire poured out , Lot decided to move up to mountain anyway.
31 Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”

Lot’s daughter did not look to God to solve their problem. Their decision was made on their own. Our solutions reflect the environment we are raised in. Whose fault was it? In my opinion, blame is squarely on shoulder of Lot, he moved them into Sodom and had educated them in ways of Sodom. What are you teaching your kids? Are you teaching them to take their problems to God or only pray when there is no other solution? Once again we see Lot had failed to teach his faith to his daughters. As christian parents, we must pay as much attention to spiritual education as we do to secular education.

At the end of chapter we see they both gave birth to Sons. One became father of Moabites and another Ammonites. As you read Old testament, you will see both were frequently at war with Israel. They mostly lived in mountainous region east of dead sea. They were mostly idolaters but not all were Evil. Ruth, for example was a Moabite and became ancestor of Jesus.

Few points to remember from this Chapter.

Life of Lot gives us hope for all those in our family who have walked away after being saved, Lot was recused even though he was not faithful. By no means any one should follow example of Lot and end up in Sodom like life style because sin brings pain and suffering but our God is merciful and he will recuse people who we might have thought are hopeless.

Sodom also tells us about the rapture. At time of rapture, bride of Christ (Church) will be saved just like Lot, before the destruction. Those of us who are saved don’t have to worry about all the pain and suffering mentioned in Revelation, we will be taken up before that. What a glorious day that will be. May God add his blessing to his word….Amen
